In this class taught by Durham based textile designer Katie Berman, we'll walk through the foundations of punch needle embroidery and you'll walk away with a half-finished piece that you can finish up at your leisure at home. Students can choose from one of three custom made designs for this class and will have the knowledge and skills to make their own in the future.
Students are provided all of the tools that they need including a no-slip embroidery hoop, Monk's cloth, a Lacis punch needle and yarn to practice their punching. Katie will walk you through the basics of this craft as well as other applications that they can use their new punching skills for. We spend the first hour going over technique and the second hour playing and troubleshooting together.
Punch needle is a technique that is similar to rug hooking that creates a raised textured surface from fiber with a tool called a punch needle. It's an inexpensive and cathartic craft to take up as a hobby. You can make pillows, wall hangings and more with this process.
Katie is a textile artist and fiber arts teacher based out of Durham, NC. She fell in love with fiber while at East Carolina University where she received her BFA in textile design. This is where she learned all of her foundational weaving, knitting, crocheting and hand-dyeing skill. After school, she wanted to pursue more sustainable design practices in her studio and has been working in the realm of natural dyes and less wasteful production practices in her making and designing. She's also discovered her love for teaching! It is her ultimate passion to empower others in their creatives dreams. Through her brand Katie Berman Textiles, she lives out this passion through teaching fiber arts classes in the community or collaborating on custom art installations for clients.
